John Hadl joined the Chargers in the AFL as a third-round pick in 1962. He brought the high-octane passing game to San Diego. He shared quarterbacking duties until 1966, when he became the starting quarterback. He averaged over 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns per season for the next four years. In 1965 and 1968, Hadl led the AFL in passing.John Hadl was an all-star quarterback once. That time was not 1974, but the early-to-mid-1960s, when Hadl led the San Diego Chargers. Under the coaching of Sid Gillman, Hadl helped revolutionize passing offense in football, and led San Diego to the 1963 AFL Championship.
