Jul 16, 2020 · El Quartelejo (or El Cuartelejo) is the name given to these remains, the farthest north pueblo we have found. In 1898, El Quartelejo was rediscovered and excavated to reveal seven rooms in the structure. It was designated as a national historic landmark in 1964, later being marked "at risk" due to weather erosion. From US Highway 83, turn northwest onto Kansas Highway 95 at the sign for Historic Lake Scott State Park. Go 1.3 miles north on Highway 95 to a well-maintained gravel road. An arrowhead-shaped sign reads “Battle Canyon.” Follow the road for about a mile to the battle site. Parking is available next to the monument, now a National Historic Site.
